So, a mate's 1600 quit on him on the way to a flocking, down on volts. Was towed to a major country town dealer and after some "swap" diagnosing the finger was pointed to the stator. Long story but bike ended up being towed to my place 600kms away.

I did the regulator/rectifier checks, it passed all but one of the diode checks and that just may be a fault with my multimeter, stator passed all checks except for the AC output voltage, these were down around 5-9 VAC. 15-25 is the range. No new ones in the country, surprise, so a SH one was purchased. After removing a very stubborn flywheel ( thanks PeteronKarra for the proper tool, my home made one wasn't good enough for the first time ever) I noticed that the magnetic ring which is glued to the inside of the flywheel seemed loose. Sure enough the glue had failed and the ring I suspect , was getting hung up on the stator windings thus rotating slower and not producing enough current/volts. We are now awaiting the arrival of a SH flywheel (thanks again Peter) and have also decided to fit the SH stator.

The decision to fit the purchased stator was prompted mainly due to the PIA job that it could be without at least removing the rear wheel. As we are also fitting a new drive belt (3 stone punctures) the swingarm is out (another issue here!!! ) so it's much easier.

The 1600 is a 2012 with relatively low kms, 60000 kms approx. Another age issue?
I am sure that I have read somewhere of this magnet ring failure before, but only the one, so it seems rare.

More to follow as we progress.

Wow, age never crossed my mind but preventative maintenance. I hope age doesn't become an issue, 14 years (w/48k km).

I remember Rayglo losing an engine ( trashed ) because of a stator failure ( dealer did not locktite the bolts and something came loose ) Things are not perfect in this world and I expect it but it does not deter me either.

A stator failure caused the BA to breakdown in Sturgis. At least I wasn't stranded in the sticks, I appreciated that!

Yes, everything inside that casing should be loctited.

Update. SH flywheel installed, thanks Pete, quick start up and all is good, charging at 14.2 volts at 1500rpm. Swingarm refitted ,new belt installed just have to put the bike back together.

Sometimes persistence and plain logic does the trick.

Well done.
